Teaching Place Command

Teaching your furry companion new obedience training techniques is an exciting and rewarding journey to embark on, and one particularly useful method is the “place” command. In order to master this command, you’ll want to start off by selecting a specific area or designated object, such as a comfy dog bed or a soft mat, to become the “place.” Once you have your “place” set up, encourage your dog to approach it with positive verbal reinforcement, loving praise, and perhaps even a delicious treat or two. As your pup gets more familiar with his new spot, gradually increase the distance and duration of his stay on the designated “place,” remembering always to use positive reinforcement methods. As you work with your canine companion to practice the “place” command over time, you’ll be able to reinforce the behavior with increasingly positive feedback. Eventually, your confident and obedient pooch will associate the “place” command with his set area or object, giving him a greater sense of structure and boundaries, and helping to control his behavior in a variety of settings.
